Architectural fragment in Tralee

Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

One cloister pillar from the medieval Dominican friary in Tralee stands embedded in a church garden rockery, its chamfered and moulded edges still sharp enough to define the shape of a lost walkway. Four such pillars remain scattered across the garden, reduced to decorative stones but still carrying the weight of a building that no longer exists. The pillar does not explain itself, yet it refuses to disappear completely because someone chose to keep it visible instead of burying it beneath soil and forgetfulness.
This record is for a cloister pillar (one of 4) which is built into a rockery in the garden of the modern Dominican church in Tralee. It has chamfered edge shafts on one face and moulded edge shafts on the other. It is presumably from the medieval Dominican friary (KE029-236001-). The above description is derived from Bradley, J., et al. 1987 Urban Archaeology Survey Part XIV County Kerry. Unpublished report. Office of Public Works. Date of upload: 23 January 2012

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
