Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

In the OPW store, Kilkenny (Kilkenny depot stone carving number: KD027). A roughly L-shaped piece of carved sandstone (L 0.17m; Wth 0.074m; T 0.05m), one length of which is curving. It is decorated with rope moulding. Possibly from a high cross. It is very similar to the rope moulding which defines the arms, as well as other panels, of the North (TS079-007002-) and South (TS079-007003-) high cross at Ahenny, Co. Tipperary, which have been dated to the 8th century based on parallels with metalwork from that period (Richardson and Scarry 1990, 29, 54-5 (plate 1 and 3).
