What is recorded here
Two bulging-eyed stone heads and a cross-shaft fragment watch the graveyard at Cloone, probably pulled from the gable of a twelfth-century church. They sit embedded in the reconstructed wall, reduced to curious decorations rather than sacred architecture. The eyes seem alive even in death, staring out across the monastery grounds with an expression halfway between mockery and warning.
Two medieval stone heads carved on sandstone corbels and part of a cross-shaft (Grant 1994) are now incorporated at S in the reconstructed wall of the graveyard attached to the site of the early monastery (LE033-006001-). The corbel (Wth 0.3m; L 0.57m; H 0.28m) W of the high cross fragment has bulging eyes but other features are work, and that (Wth 0.25m; L 0.59m; H 0.27m) to the E has a long narrow face with bulging eyes. They probably came from the gable of a twelfth century church.
