Architectural fragment

What is recorded here

Brandon Peak watches the graveyard below, casting its shadow across the buried church at Cill Chuáin. Two loose pivot stones remain, one broken with a tiny hole that might have guided a door or held a lamp. They lie among modern graves like forgotten hinges, waiting for someone to remember the shape of the building they once supported.
Kilquane church and graveyard/ Cill Chuáin (KE034-106004-): The modern rectangular graveyard and site of the medieval parish church are located directly S of Kilquane village at the foot of the W slopes of Brandon Peak. No trace of the church is now visible but 2 pivot stones lying loose in the graveyard may be related. The 2nd stone KE034-106006- is broken but preserves a small perforation measuring 0.03m in diameter. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 857. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 9 August 2013
