One of three chamfered limestone arch stones still stands in a Dingle garden, its missing sibling lost to time. The surviving fragment carries lierne rib vaulting and a mysterious mortice, proving a grand medieval doorway once spanned the street. A third stone vanished before 1918, leaving the arch incomplete and its full purpose buried under centuries of commerce and change.
One of three fragments of a limestone arch, one of which is now missing, which are in the garden of a house in Main St., Dingle.
House fragments in Main Street described in the Urban Survey of Kerry (Bradley 1987, 64-5) as follows; 'Hitchcock (1854-5, 356) described a building nearly opposite the Market House (Hussey's Castle) as having an arched passage and very thick walls. Only the arch of a medieval door and a decorated stone now survive. The site is at present occupied by Moran's Drapery. The arch Stones derive from a chamfered limestone arch with a combined span of 1.5 m. A third stone was present in 1918 (Cuppage 1986, 382, fig. 222: a,b). The other stone is in the garden at the rear of Moran' s Drapery and is an irregularly shaped six-sided stone with a panel of lierne rib vaulting on one face. The edges of the stone have a border of cable work in relief and a boss on top. There is a mortice in the back of the stone for fitting it into something. Its function is unknown. Dims. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage et al., 'Archaeological Survey of the Dingle Peninsula.' (Oidhreacht Chorca Duibhne, 1986)
