Antoine Thomson d'Abbadie

Antoine Thomson d'Abbadie was born in County Dublin, Ireland, on 3 January 1810, entering the world as a British subject before his family crossed into France. His mother was Irish and his father belonged to the ancient Basque line of lay abbots who once held weapons ready against border threats. That mixed heritage gave him a rare position between nations, preparing him for the wide expeditions and scientific work that would later define his life.
