Anomalous stone group in Carrigillihy

Published in Archaeological Inventory, Volume 1 (No. 902) as 'Two roughly parallel standing stones, 1.5m apart. The N stone (H 1.25m; 0.85m x 0.3m) leaning to N; two other stones at base suggestive of facings for bank though none survives. Stone to S (H 1.05m; 0.2m x 0.9m). (pers.comm. Paul Walsh).' Monument revisited 24 March 2005: 'In rough pasture, near the N edge of a terrace with occasional rock outcrops, on a N-facing slope with a view E over Glandore Harbour and W-N over undulating farm land. Two roughly parallel standing stones are 1.5m apart. The upright stone at S (H 1.05m; 0.9m x 0.2m) is aligned ENE-WSW. The N stone (H 1.25m; 0.85m x 0.3m), also aligned WSW-ENE, is leaning to N against a lower stone (H 0.6m; 0.8m x 0.2m) aligned NW-SE at its W corner; at its E corner a stone (H 0.45m; 1.2m x 0.2m) is aligned N-S. These latter two stones are suggestive of a facing for a bank though none survives.' The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
