Andrew Byrne was born in Navan, County Meath, Ireland in 1802, the son of Robert and Margery Moore Byrne. He studied at St. Finian College before Bishop John England recruited him in 1820 to cross the Atlantic and serve the new Diocese of Charleston. That departure turned a small Irish town into the starting point for a American bishop who would later found parishes in New York and lead the Diocese of Little Rock until his death in 1862.
