This blue commemorative plaque records: The Albemarle Bomber (1941-1945) In April 1944, an Albemarle Bomber, flying low over the village, collided with a chimney stack and crashed into this wall. Four of its five-man crew were killed. Sgt. Gerald Crowe, a Hartford man, was one of them. He is buried in St. John's churchyard. Recorded plaque organisation: Hartford Civic Society.
Sgt. Gerald Crowe was a member of the Albemarle Bomber crew who died when their aircraft crashed into a chimney stack and this wall in April 1944; his sacrifice, along with that of his fellow crew members, is remembered for its tragic illustration of the risks faced by aircrew during World War II.
