Ailsa Castle is a ruined Hamilton tower on Ailsa Craig, built in the early 16th century and later used as a prison until the 19th century. Its vaulted rooms, narrow stair and sea-cliff position suggest a place designed to resist, conceal and endure. Catholic rebels, royal officers and desperate men may all have climbed that stair, knowing the sea could swallow failure as easily as it reflected the sky.
