St Bathan's Well is associated with St Bathan, an early Christian saint believed to have been a hermit or monk active in the 7th century in the Scottish Borders. The well was historically visited for its supposed curative properties, particularly for skin ailments and general healing, and like many holy wells, it may have been the site of seasonal rituals or pilgrimages.
