Wybert's Castle is a medieval moated site at Wyberton where a raised island still sits inside wide water-cut ditches. Excavations found stone structures and pottery dating the main occupation to the 12th and 13th centuries, with possible use into the 15th century. The name “Wybert's Castle” is probably a late 19th century invention, but the water, banks and ponds make the shape of the place easy to imagine: a private estate using depth and distance as much as strength.
