In this field on 1st November 1940 Pilot Officer Bolestaw Wtasnowolski V.M., K.W. Royal Air Force 213 Squadron RAF Tangmere (formerly of the Polish Air Force) died aged 23 when his "Hurricane" V7221 crashed following aerial combat with a German ME109.
Pilot Officer Bolestaw Wtasnowolski was a Polish airman serving with the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain. The memorial marks the site of his death on 1st November 1940, when his Hurricane fighter crashed, highlighting the contribution of Polish airmen to the defence of Britain during World War II.
