This brown commemorative plaque records: The old workhouse. Pictured in the 1920's, before conversion to shops. It was a refuge for the homeless, but conditions were harsh to deter scroungers. The gas lamp was moved to the church porch when the building was demolished.
The Chalfont St Peter workhouse served as a refuge for the destitute and unemployed under the Poor Law, reflecting the Victorian attitude that harsh conditions would discourage dependency; it was later repurposed and partially demolished.
