What is recorded here

Winifred Carney was born in Bangor, County Down, in 1887 before her family moved to Belfast, where she became a radical trade unionist and joined the 1916 Rising. A statue now stands outside Belfast City Hall, yet her actual birthplace remains an ordinary house on Fisher's Hill. That gap between public monument and private origin is typical; history remembers the woman's choices but forgets the exact walls where she first learned to notice injustice.

Why this person is known: suffragist, trade unionist, Irish independence activist (1887-1943)
