Wingfield Lodge

Within a tree-lined farmyard in pasture on the W end of a ridge aligned E-W with clear views in all directions. Marked and labelled ‘Wingfield Lodge’ on 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. The house was associated with the Wingfield family, Dukes of Suffolk. Honora O’Brien (born 1559), daughter of Teige O’Brien of Smithfield Castle, married Richard Wingfield and their son Sir Edward Winfield was a progenitor of the Lords Powerscourt of County Wicklow, while one of their daughters married Donogh O’Brien of Lemenagh. A 19th-century five-bay single-story gable-ended house. According to Weir (1986, 280) ‘a seventeenth-century house of which the two-storey, one bay, gable-ended return is probably part, stood on the site of the present resident’.
