This slate commemorative plaque records: On this site stood the grammar school which William Wordsworth Poet Laureate attended as a boy. To this school also came Fletcher Christian leader of the Mutiny On The Bounty April 28th 1788
William Wordsworth was a major English Romantic poet who promoted the use of colloquial language in poetry and is credited with works such as "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud." Fletcher Christian led the famous mutiny aboard HMS Bounty in 1789, an event that has become legendary in maritime history.
