William Wilberforce and Andrew Marvell blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: The Old Grammar School was built in 1583 and remained a school until 1878. Famous Old Boys include Andrew Marvell & William Wilberforce. William Wilberforce (1759-1833) was a British politician and leader of the movement to stop slavery, significantly contributing to the abolition of the slave trade in the British Empire through his persistent advocacy and legislative efforts. Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) was an influential metaphysical poet and political writer who also served as a Member of Parliament known for his satirical works and support for the Commonwealth during the English Civil War.
