This stone commemorative plaque records: In this house was born on the 7th day of January 1832 Sir William Turner, K.C.B., F.R.S., D.Sc., LL.D., D.C.L., Knight of the Royal Prussian Order, Pour-le-Mérite, Professor in and Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh University.
Sir Dr Professor William Turner KCB DCL DSc FRS LLD was a prominent British academic and scientist who served as the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh University; he is remembered for his contributions to science education and administrative leadership in academia.
