This green commemorative plaque records: Sir William Tritton. 1875 - 1946. Near this site in 1915 Sir William Tritton, Managing Director of Wm Foster & Co. Agricultural Engineers. Designed, built and tested the first fighting tank, the prototype "Little Willie" and it's successor "Mother" ended the stalemate of trench warfare and led to allied victory in World War 1
William Tritton was a British engineer who designed and built the first tanks, "Little Willie" and its successor "Mother," which revolutionized warfare by breaking the deadlock of trench warfare during World War I.
