This blue commemorative plaque records: William Shield (1748-1829) Born in Swalwell and lived near here in his early years. Violinist, violist and composer of operas and other stage works. Appointed Master of the King's Music in 1817. Reputed composer of Auld Land Syne. Recorded plaque organisation: Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council.
William Shield was a prominent British composer, violinist, and violist of the Classical era, known for his operatic and orchestral compositions; he served as Master of the King's Music from 1817 until his death in 1829. Despite the attribution to Robert Burns, Shield is reputedly the actual composer of "Auld Lang Syne."
