This black commemorative plaque records: The Roper Gate (mid 16th century) Gateway to the former Place House, home of William Roper and his wife Margaret, daughter of Sir Thomas More. Restored by Canterbury City Council 1989
William Roper was the son-in-law of Sir Thomas More and owned Place House; Margaret Roper, his wife, was Sir Thomas More's daughter and played a crucial role in preserving her father’s works after his execution.
