William Ogilby

Birthplace

What is recorded here

William Ogilby was born in County Londonderry in 1805, the illegitimate heir to a linen fortune that funded his Cambridge education and early scientific work. He went on to name species and secretariate the Zoological Society of London, yet the Ogilby bloodline kept returning to Irish land, stones and strange collections. A mountain in Queensland still carries his name, while his later castle remains criticised for its dismal grandeur.
