William Matthew Hart

William Matthew Hart was born in Limerick, Ireland in 1830, the starting point for a life that would redraw the visual language of birds across England. He left behind unfinished medical training and stepped into John Gould’s workshop, where he spent thirty years translating hummingbird iridescence and British feather detail into lithographic plates. His hand became the chief instrument behind Gould’s greatest works, and when Gould died, Hart continued the unfinished maps of New Guinea and paradise birds for the British Museum. A boy from County Limerick thus helped make the entire Victorian world see feathers as both science and wonder.
