This blue commemorative plaque records: Speakers House believed to be the birthplace of William Lenthall (1591-1662) Speaker of the House of Commons during the Long Parliament of 1640-1660 His defiance of the King's demands in 1642 established the independence of parliament. William Lenthall was the Speaker of the House of Commons during the Long Parliament from 1640 to 1660, and his refusal to allow King Charles I entry into the House in 1642 marked a significant assertion of parliamentary sovereignty.
