Kilkenny, Ireland, gave William Joseph McDonald his birth in 1904 and St. Mary's Cathedral gave him priestly orders in 1928, sending a young man from a small county into the wide work of the San Francisco archdiocese. He later taught, led Catholic University of America, and became auxiliary bishop in Washington and San Francisco, carrying that Irish beginning into American classrooms, churches and offices until his death in 1989.
