William I and Long Brooke white plaque

This white commemorative plaque records: The Long Brooke crossed this road some seventy feet sovth-west. The wooden footbridge which spanned it, was removed when the river was arched over A.D 1832. King William I of England, also known as William the Conqueror, was the Duke of Normandy who invaded England in 1066 and became king, fundamentally altering English political and social structures; he and his troops waded through the Long Brooke in 1069 during a campaign to besiege Exeter.
