This bronze commemorative plaque records: This is the site of the royal palace, occupied by King William I, styled William the Lion, and here his son Alexander II of Scotland, was born, 24th August, 1198.
King William I, known as William the Lion, was King of Scots from 1165 to 1214, notable for his attempts to recover territories in Northumberland; his son Alexander II, born at this site on August 24, 1198, reigned from 1214 to 1249 and is remembered for his legal reforms and efforts to expand Scottish influence.
