This blue commemorative plaque records: Victorian Grammar School Here from 1837 to 1888 were housed the town's Grammar School and the Master's house. Among the first pupils was W. H. Smith. After its closure, the building became, for some years, a doctor's surgery Recorded plaque organisation: Tavistock Town Council.
William Henry Smith attended the Victorian Grammar School from 1837 to 1840; he later founded W.H. Smith & Sons, a prominent British bookseller and newsagent chain that significantly influenced the distribution of literature and periodicals in the United Kingdom.
