William Brooke O'Shaughnessy

William Brooke O'Shaughnessy was born in Limerick in 1809, the son of Daniel O'Shaughnessy and Sarah Boswell, within a family crowded with clergymen and religious office. He left Dublin for Edinburgh, mastered chemistry and toxicology, then carried that knowledge into India, where he helped found intravenous therapy and introduced medical cannabis to Western practice. A young man from a Protestant Irish household became a globalshaper of medicine through observation, courage and unusual judgment.
