This black commemorative plaque records: High Bridge. Lord Armstrong 1810-1900. William George Armstrong's water-powered rotary engine was built here at Henry Watson's works, 1838. Inventor, engineer, scientist and businessman, Armstrong employed 25,000 people at his Elswick works. Recorded plaque organisation: City of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Lord William Armstrong CB FRS, Henry Watson were instrumental in the development of water-powered rotary engines; Armstrong, a prolific inventor and industrialist, significantly contributed to engineering advancements and managed one of Britain's largest armament factories.
