Whorlton Castle is a ruined medieval fortification built in the early 12th century on a ridge overlooking the road between Thirsk and Stokesley. John Darcy levelled the original earthen mound in the mid-14th century to raise a stone keep and gatehouse, transforming the wooden stronghold into a permanent residence. The gatehouse still stands in poor condition beside the abandoned village, preserving the shadow of a family that held the land through marriage and inheritance until the early modern period.
