What is recorded here
This black commemorative plaque records: A public house can be traced back to this area as early as 1717, when a property here used to be referred to as 'The Wheat Cake. Prior to about 1820, it was known as "The Dog Inn'. The Wheatsheaf public house is a Grade Il listed building originally built as a farm dwelling, it is located in the centre of the ancient market town of Garstang (Gaertung, meaning common land or meadow land). The Doomsday Book records it as Cherestanc. Back in the 18th century, Garstang was a popular stopping point en-route from London to Edinburgh. A traditional market still takes place down the main high street, with over 70 stalls lining the length of the street. This dates back to 1310. The original farmhouse was later converted to an inn offering much needed rest and refreshment to horse drawn coaches and their passengers and more recently to locals and visitors from near and far. You are very welcome to enjoy our traditional offering. Recorded plaque organisation: Wheatsheaf Public House.
The Wheatsheaf Public House in Garstang has served as a vital resting point for travelers since at least 1717, reflecting the town's historical importance as a stopover on the route from London to Edinburgh. Its transformation from a farmhouse to an inn highlights the evolution of local architecture and hospitality in this ancient market town documented in the Domesday Book as Cherestanc.
