Wharncliffe Crags is a sandstone escarpment formed during the Permian period, approximately 290 to 250 million years ago, through the deposition of aeolian (wind-blown) sands in a desert environment. It is notable as a prominent local landmark and for its historical use as a site for industry and recreation, including the former Wharncliffe Tower and the development of the first public park in Sheffield.
