Wemyss Castle, East Entrance, Gate Piers and Lodge

Gate Lodge (19th Century), Gate Pier(s) (19th Century)

What is recorded here

Mortons and the county clique built Wemyss Castle as a private showpiece, not a public museum. The east entrance still wears its nineteenth-century gate lodge and twin piers like a uniform, marking the boundary between ordinary Fife road and the family's own domain. They wanted visitors to feel small before they even saw the halls, and the stone still does that work.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Wemyss Castle, East Entrance, Gate Piers and Lodge as Gate Lodge (19th Century), Gate Pier(s) (19th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Wemyss Castle, East Entrance, Gate Piers and Lodge were built in the 19th century by the Wemyss family, who had long held the lands of Wemyss. The structures are important as part of the historic estate of a prominent Scottish noble family with a significant role in local and maritime history.
