Welbourn Castle — Report the wrong picture

Castle Hill in Welbourn is a medieval ringwork, not a motte, whose wide ditches and massive bank still enclose a D-shaped court. A 1288 document named a hall, kitchen, brew house, ox house, cowshed, sheepfold, tower and ditch, while later stone walls and robber trenches suggest the castle gave up its buildings before fading from memory. The earthworks may have held lamps, smoke and argument as much as defence, and the lost shape of that daily life remains the interesting part.
