Ballygrennan Castle rose above a forgotten river weir where James Fox paid the Earle of Kildare for the right to take local fish. The water worked the stones, the stones worked the men, and the men left behind a place nobody can now point to.

The precise location of the medieval fish weir of Ballygrennan which stood on the Morningstar River to the N of Ballygrennan Castle (LI040-007----) has not been identified. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that James Fox of Ballygrennan an Irish Papist was in possession of 'a Castle an orchard and a fishing weare out of repayre Due to the Earle of Kildare seventeene shillings and six pence p[er] ann[um] chiefrye' (Simington 1938, 133).
