Wedge tomb in Carrowcastle (gallen By., Kilgarvan Par.)

In pasture, located on the level top of a low rise, in an area of undulating terrain. The location provides good, though generally not extensive, views. The Ox Mountains define the skyline at NE−SE, and Nephin Mountain is a focal point on the far horizon to SW. This wedge tomb is a National Monument in State care (no. 293). It is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. OPW Topographical Files record the traditional name as 'Tober na Cloiche (Tubbernaclogha)'. It consists of roughly oval cairn (11m NE−SW; 9.5m NW−SE; H 0.7m) of earth and stones, oriented NE−SW. The cairn is largely grass-covered, with medium to large stones and boulders protruding from the sod, and scattered loosely on top. Several large rounded boulders around the perimeter of the cairn, especially at S and W, appear to be in situ kerb stones. Some of the looser stones on top may be the result of relatively recent field clearance activity. A very large irregular-shaped boulder (c. 2m NW−SE; c. 1.8m NE−SW; H c. 0.6-0.7m) rests on top of the cairn towards its SW end. The boulder is roughly triangular in cross-section, rising to an irregular-shaped peak at top above a flat base. It serves as a capstone over a shallow hollow or void in the cairn, which is partly infilled with loose stone. Wedge tomb, dating to the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (c. 2500–1000 BC). This type of tomb is characteristic of the western Irish landscape and reflects early communal burial practices in the region.
