Waughton Castle is a fourteenth-century ruin where a small tower still rises twenty-five feet above a rock terrace in East Lothian. Patrick Hepburn feared English destruction in 1547, and the castle was sacked that September, while later stories claim Mary, Queen of Scots, visited for an archery match. The Hepburns lost and recovered it through raids and legal claims before its stones helped build nearby cottages.
