Walton Castle began as a Roman Saxon Shore fort in the late 3rd century, with curved corner towers and flint walls that watched the sea for invaders. The Normans later turned those same stones into a castle bailey for the Bigod earls, until Henry II broke the castle open and stole its materials for Orford. The Roman fort survived that human violence, standing proudly on its cliff until the North Sea finally swallowed it during the 18th century.
