Wall monument in Unknown Townland

17th-century wall-monument of Reverend Dr. Thomas Buttolph of Stephen's Green, Dean of Raphoe (1671-6), Co. Donegal, located in the north choir aisle of St Patrick’s Cathedral (DU018-020269-) (Fenton 2012, 32).  Described in the Urban Survey of Dublin City (Bradley and King 1988, Vol. 1, 92) as follows; ‘Thomas Buttolph 1676. Coffin shaped limestone tablet with an incised inscription in script below a shield bearing lion rampant: HERE LYETH BVRYED THE REVEREND DOCTOR THOMAS BUTTOLPH DEANE OF RAPHOE HERETOFORE CHAPLAINE BOTH TO KING CHARLES Ye FIRST & NOW SACRED MAIESTY KING CHARLES THE SECOND MARYED ANN Ye DAUGHTER OF HENERY MINGAY ESQ 0F AMERINGILL IN THE COUNTY OF NORFOLK BY WHOM HE LEFT ISSVE ONLY ONE DAVGHTER & DIED TH [      ] DAY OF AVGVST 1676’ (Memorials of the Dead Vol. II, 485, Vol. VI, 531). Rev. Thomas Buttolph was married to Anne Mingay, daughter of Henry Mingay of Arminghall, Norfolk, England.  They appeared to have lived on St Stephen's Green at the corner with South King Street (Berry 1910, 98) Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien
