Wall monument in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny, originally on the S chancel wall, near the crossing. A white marble wall monument (H 3.41m; Wth 1.92m) for Col. Robert Maude (d. 1684) and Frances Wandesford, Anthony Maude, Ann Maude (d. 1703) (Potterton 1975, 83). It is built in the Baroque-style, representing a richly ornamented stylised neo-Classical portico over an elaborate apron. At the bottom left is inscribed ‘Stanton of Harthnale London’, the stonemason. The inscription reads: This monument erected/ To memory/ Of the several following persons/ (of the family of Maude)/ who are intered near this place/ Viz/ Coll Robert Maude/ formerly of Rippon, Yorkshire,/ late of Dundrum, in the County of Tipperary/ who died Ano Dm 1684/ Frances his wife/ (of the name and House of Wandesford)/ Anthony their only son/ and Anne youngest daughter./ This Lady/ who lived unmarried/ and dy’d in the 58th year of Her Age/ Ano Dm 1703/ By her last Will did appoint her Executors/ To distinguish and adorn/ the Burying place of her family. The monument was moved to the S wall of the former 'Monuments Room' in the N transept. It was rebuilt in its present location on the S side of the S transept in 2015.
