Wall monument in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny. A mural plaque commemorating Patrick Shee and Maria Pembroke (d. 1646), built into the cross wall constructed in 1804 connecting the SW side of the church with the graveyard wall (Carrigan 1905, vol. 3, 101; Cockerham 2009, 360). A rectangular panel (L 0.92m; Wth 0.74m), built of fossiliferous limestone, showing a heraldic shield of Shee impaling Pembroke (Crotty 1978, 310-11). The shield has a convex surface. The motto VINCIT VERITAS (Truth Conquers) appears on a scroll beneath the shield. The initials P.S. and M.P. are in false-relief on either side of the scroll. At the base of the panel is an incised inscription in Roman running hand which is now illegible but was transcribed by Carrigan (ibid.) as follows: [DOM] Patricius Shee, Gasparis filius, generalis vice-comitis munere in civitate Kilkeniensi bis laudabiliter perfunctus, vir omnibus charus, numerosae & optimae prolis’ providus parens et pius provisor, mortalitatis memor sibi, charissimae uxori Mariae Pembrocke, Jacobo Shee heredi, liberis et posteris posuit.
