Wall monument in Gardens (kilkenny City By., St. Mary’s Par.)

At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny, built into the cross wall constructed in 1804 connecting the SW side of the church with the graveyard wall. A rectangular early to mid-17th century cartouche panel (L 0.72m; Wth 0.59m), composed of fossiliferous limestone, bearing an heraldic shield of Kelly impaling Grace (Crotty 1978, 312-13). Grace arms of the lion rampant have been incised. At the base of the slab in incised Roman lettering is the motto ‘TURRUS FORTIS MIHI DEUS’, which translates as, To me God is a brave tower.
