Wall monument in Clonroad Beg

In the N wall of the nave of Ennis Friary (CL033-082001-). A limestone tablet (H 0.56m; wth 1m) with an inscription in Latin in incised Roman capitals commemorating Dermot Considine. The inscription reads ‘DIERMITIUS MAC CONSIDIN PROSE ET SUIS POSTERIS HUNC TUMULUM FIERI FECIT ANNO 1631 EST COMMUNE MORI MORS NULLI PARCIT HONORI DEBILIS ET FORTIS VENIUNT AD FUNERA MORTIS’. This translates as ‘Dermot Considine, for himself and his posterity caused this tomb to be made, the year 1631. Death is common to all. Death no one spares. The honourable, the weak and the strong, all come to the obsequies of death.’ (translation Fr. Senan Hedderman O.F.M. 1991). A small ringed cross with expanded terminals is carved in false relief on the tablet to the left of the inscription.
