Vera Brittain and Charles George Gordon blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Maer Bay Court. Built c1840 as a home for General Gordon and known originally as Miramar. The General was killed at Khartoum before he was able to occupy the property but it was lived in by his sister. During the period when it was a hotel, Vera Brittain, the authoress, was a frequent visitor. Recorded plaque organisation: Exmouth Society.

Major General Charles George Gordon was a British Army officer and administrator known for his service in various parts of the world, notably China and Sudan; he died defending Khartoum against Mahdist forces. Vera Brittain was an English writer and pacifist, best known for her autobiography "Testament of Youth," which details her experiences during World War I.
