Venlaw Castle stands north of Peebles as a surviving Scottish Baronial house built in 1782 for Alexander Stevenson after the older Hay family fortification disappeared. Its rooms have belonged to sheriffs, admirals, tea planters and hotel keepers, giving the stones a rare memory of ordinary human ambition. The building still faces the Edinburgh Road with gardens at its feet, carrying forward the life of a place that kept changing hands but never stopped being inhabited.
