Uttershill Castle is a ruined 16th-century tower house south of Penicuik that belonged to the Prestons of Gorton and Craigmillar before the Clerks of Penicuik bought it in 1702. Its rectangular freestone body had a vaulted basement, a first-storey hall reached by a straight stair, and a later kitchen and chamber that are now gone. Even after decay, the castle served as a gunpowder store, which gives its empty rooms a sudden dangerous purpose.
