This white commemorative plaque records: John Russell (1898-1958). Last miller and owner of Cranbrook Union Windmill. John Russell saved Cranbrook Union Windmill from demolition by refusing a large sum of money from developers. Instead, he sold the mill and the very valuable surrounding land to Kent County Council for just one shilling in return for their promise to preserve the windmill. John Russell was the last owner and miller of Cranbrook Union Windmill, saving it from demolition by selling it to Kent County Council for a symbolic one shilling to ensure its preservation.
