This blue commemorative plaque records: From this river, on the 3rd June 1944, sailed the 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment (The Pompadours) to take part in Operation Overlord. They landed in Normandy on 6th June "D-Day", liberating Bayeaux on the 7th June. Lest we forget. Recorded plaque organisation: Rotary Club of Lymington.
The 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment, known as The Pompadours, participated in Operation Overlord during World War II, landing on D-Day and playing a crucial role in the liberation of Normandy, including Bayeux on June 7th, 1944.
